The Lineage of The Coming One

" If any 'one' claims to be ' the One' they tell both a great truth and a great lie "

The paper looks at the whole idea of lineage, avatars and unity between the different traditions from the perspective of synthesis

The word lineage contains two words - 'line' and 'age'. Together they convey the image of a flow or current moving through time. In mathematics a line begins with a point and then extends through many points in one direction and dimension.

In a spiritual 'lineage' the originating 'point' is normally an individual who 'broke through' from the world of time into the timeless. As a result, a stream of this 'timeless' energetic 'entered' the world of time through this individual and his or her teachings. This stream then flows from point to point , each point a lineage 'holder' until we reach the holder of the point in the present.

Those seeking to 'unify' the different traditions tend to work with models that 'relate' the different 'lineages' to each other in 'time' - locating the source of all the streams as if they were tributaries of one great river.

One version of this is to locate the source of the different lineages in the past. This is done by relating the core concepts that lie at the centre of the traditions, or by relating the originators themselves. The 'diversity' of the traditions is seen to come from modifications of the essential historical interrelatedness that occur over time as the teachings are 'stepped down'. The originators or 'breakthrough points' were seen as really much closer to each other than the 'descendents' or current lineage holders. In fact in some cases they 'were' each other - in the sense of reincarnation; knew each other - if they lived in the same time - or had access to each others teachings. This access is seen to have occured via the movement of core concepts throughout the world from, for example, India to Egypt to Greece and so forth. In this version of the model the 'pure' source and the unity of the different streams lies in the past.

I call this the 'big bang' version of lineage unity. It is rather like tracing back one's ancestory to find a point of connection even if we have to go back to our tradition's version of Adam and Eve.

The other version balances this and we could call it the 'big crunch' theory. In this model the unity will occur in the future. A great Avatar is coming and expected by different traditions. Even though they are named different names and expected at different times they are really the same being or even collectively the being who will bring salvation, enlightenment and a cross tradition unity.

In this version the flow of time runs from the periphery to the centre of the sphere. The current diversity of the traditions will be unified in He ( or Her ) Who Is Coming to demonstrate the inner core of all traditions.

In practise both these versions tend to operate together and go back and forth in the minds of those within the different philosophical and religious traditions. They are a temporal model that represents the in and out breath of time in the idea of cycles - the 'ages' of the greeks or the 'yugas' of the Hindu traditions.

The point of this paper is not to make these versions or the temporal model of consciousness wrong. I think it holds great wisdom and is a relatively enlightened way of viewing our evolutionary journey from within time and space compared to the materialistic world view. The point is that this model represents an attempt to understand our collective experience of consciousness from within consciousness itself through the idea of unity or really the unification of consciousness. This unity will occur, so the model says, in the future ( or has occurred in the past ) because the one thing that is patently obvious to consciousness is that it is not currently occurring! There may be positive or negative signs of its occurring depending upon one's perspective - right? But the one thing the unity - seeking consciousness is not experiencing is the very thing it seeks - unity!

While we do not yet have unity we do have ( and have always had ) synthesis. Synthesis refers not to an idea but the 'reality in experience' that all the different 'lineages' as they are occurring, have occurred or will occur, are all manifestations of the One Life. They ARE the same and no unification is necessary ( although it is sought after 'in consciousness'). From this perspective they ( the traditions ) do not need to be related to each other and nor does 'common ground' between them need to be found. There is no need to establish 'who' was the reincarnation of 'who', or which current or future teacher is the 'real avatar'. The common or synthetic 'ground' of their related ness does not need to be created because it already IS outside of time and space manifestation.

All analogies are poor to express this but imagine the points on the above spheres ( and all the points in between them ) as being 'holes' all created by the same instrument - an instrument able to reach to any dimensional aspect of the sphere whether temporal or spatial. An instrument we might call God or the Father/Mother ( Who sent all the 'son and daughter gods' ) into incarnation as representatives of this transcendent, immanent, ever present reality.

All of a sudden the urge to unify the points from within the sphere disappears along with the subtle competition between the points and between those groups who would call the points together and so forth. The synthesis that they already ARE - right here and now - reveals itself.

Let me say again that this view does not intend to make the many impulses and initiatives towards 'group unity' within the manifest world - within and between different traditions 'wrong'. It is neither 'wrong' nor 'right' but simply what IS occurring as a consequence of the growing awareness of the reality of the underlying synthesis. This synthesis is revealed as often by the 'failures' in attempts at unity as by 'successes' because unity can never achieve synthesis and nor can it be created or destroyed in time and space. What 'cycles' in time is the realisation of this synthesis by the consciousness that is expressing through the differentiated expression of the one life scattered through the whole ring pass not of the entity - in this case planet earth. Cycles also occur within individual consciousness which is why a 'teacher' can be speaking 'as' the Godhead from within that experience in one moment and acting like a total asshole in the next.

In the context of the idea of a Coming One it is not another or existing 'point' within the sphere that we need to focus on, wait for, or hark back to. The 'Coming One' IS the reality of the ever present synthesis that underlies the whole of manifestation and the only place this realisation can take place is in the consciousness of the planet itself. The One who sent all other avatars ( or created them ) in time and space IS here and is not just another 'point' . It is all the avatars at once - the point, the whole point and much more besides the point! And the One is not Coming! It is the realisation of that Presence that is coming!

So, is Maitreya the One? Is Sai Baba the One? Maybe you are the One? Oh my god, am I the One? YES. OH YES! Well - come.
